Imagine my delight upon reading the headline “Monster shark tourney organizer dead in duck hunting accident” in last Tuesday’s edition of The Martha’s Vineyard Times.

The story was sent to me by a loyal reader whom we’ll call “Liz.”

The Martha’s Vineyard Times report explains that “Steven James, president of the Boston Big Game Fishing Club, sponsor of the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament … was one of two duck hunters who died Tuesday morning when their 15-foot aluminum skiff overturned.”

Unfortunately, I’m quite familiar with the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament. In July 2012, I wrote a heartwarming piece of “wishful fiction” titled “Monster Shark Tournament Goes Wonderfully Wrong,” which was accompanied by a magnificent cartoon by Los Angeles-based illustrator Vin Paneccasio.

Fortunately, Peter Martell, who owns and operates a hotel in Oak Bluffs, was quoted in the Martha’s Vineyard Times story as saying, about the annual competitive slaughter, “Without (James) I think it will go away.”

Clearly, we have reason to celebrate.

I just added my condolences to the comments at The Martha‚Äôs Vineyard Times. Quote: “Good riddance to two more animal murderers. Hope this is a trend.” Let the death threats begin!
